Description

CIRCA 1865-1875 ORNATE FRENCH “CAM – RUE LA PAIX 24” MANTLE / DESK BAROMETRIC ANEROID BAROMETER / THERMOMETER / CLOCK COMPENDIUM
Made by “CAM” of PARIS.  Both porcelain dial faces marked
“CAM.”
This combination BAROMETER / CLOCK & THERMOMETER
is about as exquisite as one will find in this form of 19th century compendium.
This a super fine BAROMETER / THERMETER & CLOCK COMPENDIUM for the mantle or desk-top.   This particular form is extremely rare and desirable and never or almost never come up for sale. The BAROMETER works fine, while the THERMOMETER has mercury, but separated inside – and it is not broken or cracked.  The clock is not working but probably just needs an oiling and a adjustment or just needs to be wound with a key – the latter which is lacking.  Crude brass hand cut nuts are found under bottom brass plate.  We date this to 1865-1875.  But it could be 1840’s or 1850’s.  Hard to tell.  But it is early and desirable.
STANDS  5 1/2″ TALL w/ finger carry ring in “up” position and is also 5 1/2″ WIDE.  The whole assembly is a mere 2 1/2″ DEEP.
Wear is consistent with age and use. No cracks or chips or scratches to beveled front and back glass. Porcelain dials on both the clock face and the barometer face. Barometer porcelain has 1/35th of a hair thick crack lower left of the dial face to the upper right side of the dial face – which is near impossible to see.  Backside thermometer under beveled edged glass has a backplate that may be silver, as it is darkened and sporadically tarnished with a bluish/ grayish tinge
Pig tail type thermometer not broken. Beveled glass door to thermometer we are unable to open… tried with a paperclip pushing through the hole in glass. Some one can figure it out. Beveled glass barometer door on right opens easily with push button finger tab on side.   Clock parts and balance wheel moves fine, but we do not have a key to fully wind to see if clock works. Right now clock is not working although balance wheel spins a little bit back and forth okay, then stops.
Clock hands can be moved from rear adjustment key winding stem. Base stone / marble with no chips or cracks outside of one chip on each side top rim edge that is so tiny, it is impossible to see unless you are looking for it under a good light. Green felt lacking on bottom.   Please see all photos as they are part of the description
A SUPER BEAUTIFUL and EXQUISITE PIECE.
